Melanie Smart

Child Psychologist

As a registered Clinical Psychologist specialising in Infant, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, I offer high quality, evidence based assessment and intervention to children aged 0-18 and their families. I am based in Chichester, West Sussex and will see people in West Sussex and from the surrounding areas of Hampshire and Surrey and those willing to travel from further afield.

I provide flexible independent clinics to children, young people and their families. The aim is to provide detailed assessment and tailored therapeutic interventions for a range of emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties.

No two children, individuals or parents are the same, and as such, the advice and support I offer is tailored to meet a family’s unique needs, as and when they arise. My approach is based on your personal needs and mutually identified goals and I take a collaborative approach to our work together. Home and school visits can be provided by arrangement and I can offer consultation to other professionals and networks working with your child upon request. I can also work with wider family members if this is identified as helpful to your child.

It can be very daunting for children and families alike to seek help from a Psychologist. However, I aim to provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, free of judgement and jargon. I hope you will feel relaxed and supported and I aim to make the process as transparent and straightforward as possible. I advocate early intervention and prevention so if you are worried about a child or young person, please do not hesitate to request an assessment. No issue is too small.

Clinics and Appointments

Clinics take place on Thursday evenings from 5pm-9pm (last appointment 8pm).

Initial Appointment (Assessment) – These are up to an hour and a half in length. At this appointment, we will discuss the issues you are seeking help with and how we might work together to alleviate them. We then formulate a plan about the next steps. This will include an intervention (treatment) plan. You can decide at this appointment if you would like to proceed.

Follow-up Appointments (Intervention) – These sessions are 50 minutes long. The intervention will be a form of talking therapy and sessions can be weekly or fortnightly. The format and number of sessions will be agreed in the initial appointment. If we complete the number of sessions and we feel more sessions are needed we will review progress, re-formulate the plan and continue. You are free to stop the talking therapy at any time.

I am happy to work in partnership with other treatments and interventions provided all professionals are aware of each other’s involvement and role.

I will accept professional and self-referral. Consent must be gained from the family for referrals on their behalf. Please see the website and email or telephone with any queries.

If you are over 16, you can self-refer and I will see you without parental consent. However, if it is beneficial to involve parents I will work with you to think about how to do this. Young people under 16 must attend with a parent or guardian.
